A man caught a glimpse of a beautiful woman sitting on her balcony while on a ship sailing into port. While stopping for a drink in the local pub he asked the locals about the woman in the house on the cliff. The people he asked advised the man to stay away from the woman as she knew evil magic and he would disappear as did all the other suitors that called on her.
The man decided that if he couldn't be with the woman then he would settle in the town to be close to her.
He made it a point to go down to the beach everyday just to catch a glimpse of her and every night he would hear a sweet voice carried on the wind, inviting the man to come to her.
Soon it wasn't enough to stand on the beach and he would walk up the road and stand outside of her gate.
His heart yearned to see her this close, but he only heard the closing of doors and laughter.
His nights were tormented by the voice and noticed it was becoming more clear.
One night he decided that he would call on the woman as he could no longer bare to be without her. He started thinking about what he would say or do when he was face to face with her. The closer he got to her house the more heated and irrational his thoughts became.
He pushed opened the gate and a warm breeze carrying the sent of jasmine made him turn to his right.
There standing right in front of him was the object of his passion.
He drew closer to her and she embraced him. He whispered his longing to her and at that moment vines snaked up his arms and wrapped around him. He fought hard to break them and then he heard it. That sweet voice laughing, but this time it bore him no sweet thoughts. It would be the last sound he ever heard again.
The next morning a traveler arrived in town asking about the woman in the house on the cliff. The people warned him to stay away as many men have gone and never returned.
